雖然是精神病但沒關係: 現實的童話 It’s Okay to not be Okay: The real tales

《令人戰慄的格林童話》早已告訴我們,很多知名的童話故事本身並不歌頌美德和人性本善。

The book “Dreadful in the Truth" has long told us that the origins of many fairy tales are not glorifying the virtue of human nature.

本以為《雖然是精神病但沒關係》內容會與《沒關係,是愛情呀》相似,都是描述男女主角如何透過彼此的衝突和接納去療癒大家的童年傷痛,但兩者方向不同。而且,編劇加入童話和輔導的元素,畫面吸引,內容深入淺出丶具哲學性—討論愛丶接納與被需要,將這愛情故事昇華之餘,更引伸了社會大眾對精神病患者和有情緒問題的人的理解和接受程度的討論,每集看完都要沉澱一下。

I thought both “It is Okay to not be Okay"  and “It’s Okay. That’s Love" would share similar story as both of them describe how the hero and heroine can heal each other from their unpleasant childhood trauma through conflict and acceptance, but the two directions are indeed different. Moreover, the elements of fairy tales and counseling theory added by the screenwriter enriched the visual pictures of the drama. The philosophical content ,which discussing love, acceptance and being needed,  is in-depth but easy to be understood. It not only sublimates this love story, but also extends the public’s attention to the people suffered from mental illnesses and with emotional problems. The discussion of the understanding and acceptance of each episode should be settled.

童話故事本是小朋友認識世界的濾鏡而社會普遍都認為小朋友對世界的認知應該是樂觀積極然而到他們長大了才意識到世界的不完美和人性的黑暗面這樣真的比較嗎?作為童話書作家的女主角高文英(徐睿知飾演)對童話的理解—「童話是一個喚醒現實的清醒劑」就回應了這一討論。劇中她創作的成人童話,就用簡單的字句,解釋著世界的複雜。

Fairy tales are a filter for children to understand the world, and society generally believes that children’s perception of the world should be optimistic and positive, but if they don’t realize the imperfections of the world and the dark side of human nature until they grow up, is this really better? Quoting the way how the fairy tale book writer Ko Moon-young (played by Seo Ye-ji ) in the drama understands fairy tales, “a fairy tale is a sober agent to awaken reality, it somehow responds to this discussion. The adult fairy tale she created in the play uses simple words to explain the complexity of the world.

雖然高文英的童話故事畫風血腥恐怖,但故事的結局卻發人心省,當中不少特別反映家庭教育的重要性。原生家庭是心理學中的概念,影響不少人的成長。劇中交代了很多文鋼太(金秀賢飾演)的媽媽如何分配愛予兩兄弟,南朱里(朴珪瑛飾演)的媽媽(金美京飾演)對一眾後輩的母愛和高文英的父母親如何影響她的性格等劇節,反映人被愛的需要。除了主要角色外,幾位住在精神病院的病人的病情都與其父母有關,反映編劇有心討論原生家庭與精神健康的關係。

Although Ko Moon-young’s fairy tales are bloody and terrifying, the endings of the stories are inspiring, many of which reflect the importance of family education. Family of orientation is a concept in psychology and it affects the growth of many people. The drama explains how Moon Gang-tae (played by Kim Soo-hyun)’s mother distributes love to the two brothers, Nam Ju-ri’s (played by Park Kyu-young) mother (played by Kim Mi-kyung)’s maternal love to the younger generations, and how Ko Moon-young’s parents affected her personality. Those screens reflect how the characters show their needs to be loved. In addition to the main role, the conditions of several patients living in the mental hospital are also related to their parents, reflecting the screenwriter’s intention to discuss the relationship between the native family and mental health.

整部劇最震撼的一幕 The most impressive scene.

被愛的需要不被滿足而導致自我認同感不足的鋼太,在他主觀的角度,他從小就覺得母親給予他和哥哥的愛是不同的,他自覺存在的價值是作哥哥的照顧者,導致他不可好好享受自己的人生,後來他才意識到母親和哥哥對他的愛。他一直用假面具去強作堅強生活,作為一個親職化的小孩,與高文英一樣,難與人建立親密關係。被童年綁住了,不懂得如何擺脫。鋼太的腦海中有想像過哥哥死了,他就可以自由。後來這種自由文英得到了,但就在她父親去世後,她有的是矛盾的心情,畢竟她和父親都有過美好的回憶。大概家人就是一種讓人又愛又恨的存在。

Gang-tae whose need to be loved is not satisfied has caused him a lack of self-identity. From his subjective point of view, he felt that the love his mother gave him and his brother was different from a young age, and he thought his only self-value was to be his brother’s caregiver. As a result, he could not enjoy his life, but later he realized the love of his mother and brother. He put up a mask and pretend to be strong to live his life, but he is just a parentified child. Like Ko Moon-young, it is difficult for him to establish close relationships with others. He was tied up by his childhood and did not know how to get rid of it. Gang-tae had imagined the death of his brother, by that time he would be free. And it is supposed the way how Ko Moon-young should have felt relieved but right after her father passed away, she had a conflicting emotion. She still remembers her beautiful memory with her father. Probably family is a kind of existence that people love and hate.

整部劇的亮點一定是文尚泰(吳正世飾演),他飾演一位有自閉症的天才畫家,旁人的目光和偏見對他造成傷害。演員在揣摩角色時花的心機,成功將角色塑造成可愛又對生活充滿活力的角色,結局時他找到需要他畫插畫的人,同時又對鋼太說出「文鋼太是文鋼太的」,暗示鋼太可以放下他這個包袱。

The highlight of the whole play must be Moon Sang-tae (played by Oh Jung-se), who plays a genius painter with autism who suffers from discrimination and misunderstanding. The actor’s acting successfully portrayed the character into a cute and energetic character. In the last episode, he found someone who need him to draw illustrations, and he said to Gang-tae, “Moon Gang-tae belongs to Moon Gang-tae." “It implies that Gang-tae can let go of his burden.

「童話故事只有結局是快樂的」"The only happy part in fairy tale is the ending." 

劇作想呈現的不是一個悲觀的世界,以往我們覺得童話故事離地,因為王子的拯救丶仙子的幫忙和大團圓結局都在現實中缺貨。然而,不同的童話故事中主人翁在找到幸福的過程都不是一帆風順,舉例說灰姑娘都被後母欺負過才有仙子幫忙。如果我們聚焦的是故事中那不怕經歷的勇氣和經歷過後的快樂,學習接納自己的黑暗面和過去,現實也許就像童話一樣,人們也會找到幸福。

The drama does not present a pessimistic world. In the past, fairy tales were said off the ground, because the rescue of the princes, the help of the fairies and the happy ending were all out of stock in reality. However, the process of finding happiness in different fairy tales is not smooth and easy for the princesses too. For example, Cinderella has been bullied by her stepmother before a fairy can help. If we focus on the courage of the princesses to face their experience and the happiness after experience in the story, learn to accept our dark side and the past, reality may be like a fairy tale, and people will find happy ever after in it.

「只有將那些(不快的)回憶藏在內心深處的人才會變得更加堅強,更加灸熱丶更加柔韌。幸福只允許那樣的人去爭取。」

“Only those who hide those (unpleasant) memories deep in their hearts will become stronger, more passionate and more flexible. Happiness only allows those people to go for it."

 

後記:二零二零年全城抗疫疲勞,精神健康受到關注,而且愈來愈多通俗的劇作都以此為主題,希望大眾對有精神病和情緒困擾的人有更多的理解。韓國的自殺率連續13年全球第1位,在《雖然是精神病但沒關係》的第一集,有「自殺橋」稱號的麻浦大橋亦有出現。雖然韓國政府於2012年在橋的兩側欄杆設置勵志短語,希望令企圖自殺的人重燃對生命的盼望,但2014年官方數據顯示當地自殺率不跌反升,及後有關短語更被移除。大概這告訴我們,面對有情緒問題的人,有時候簡單的陪伴比十句:「你要加油」來得有用。

Postscript: In 2020, the whole city is fighting against COVID-19. More people concern about mental health, and more and more popular dramas are talking about this theme. It is good to see the public have more understanding on people suffering mental illnesses or some emotional distress. In South Korea, the suicide rate has been ranked first in the world for 13 consecutive years. In the first episode of “It is Okay not to be Okay", the Mapo Bridge with the title of “Suicide Bridge" appeared. Although the South Korean government set up inspirational phrases on the railings on both sides of the bridge in 2012, hoping to rekindle the hope of life for those who attempted suicide there, official data in 2014 showed that the local suicide rate did not fall but rose instead, and the relevant phrases later were removed. Probably this tells us that in the face of people with emotional problems, sometimes a simple companionship is more useful than ten sentences like “You have to work hard."
